In Australia, our democratic power starts at the ballot box, but it does not end there. Our Members of Parliament (MPs) are elected to represent our interests and to do that effectively, they need to know what we think about major issues. We can all influence the government’s decisions about our future by engaging with them – in person, on email or by phone – on the topics we care about.
Together, we can make a difference to how Australia acts on climate change simply by telling our MPs what we want, and what we expect.

Every contact matters We have heard many times from insiders in MPs’ offices that personal contact from constituents is taken very seriously - each contact is tallied to help evaluate how we feel about different issues, and recurring issues are discussed in policy meetings. |
You don’t have to be an expert – the simple fact that you care is a good enough reason to contact a politician.
Climate Briefings and templates
Our Climate Briefings will help you get to the heart of the climate consequences of major policy issues, and our email templates will get you started in crafting your message to your MP. The most effective messages are short (a page or less) and personal. Explain what you feel, why it matters to you and what you want your MP to do about it. When your MP replies (or doesn't!), follow up and keep them accountable – check out [our tips in the speech bubbles – link?].
If you’d like some company, come along to one of our MPEGs (MP Engagement Groups) for practical assistance and friendly support. And to receive regular tips, issue briefings and event information to help you engage with your MPs subscribe to our monthly MPEG News Update
Whenever you contact or engage with an MP (email, meeting or call), please tell us. This is vital in helping us to demonstrate our impact, particularly in applying for grants to support our work.
