Our first volunteer-led Ongoing Facilitator Training (OFT)

Our Facilitator community is taking ownership of the Ongoing Facilitator Trainings (OFT) as we're getting ready for re-launching the Climate Conversations program this year.

Training as a volunteer facilitator with Climate for Change has many benefits. It is not just a chance to develop or hone skills in public speaking, or a way to take meaningful climate action. Our facilitators often talk about the support and comfort that belonging to the facilitator community brings.

“Being part of the C4C community certainly helped with my own anxieties […] and feel part of something bigger”.

It was fitting, therefore, to allow our Facilitator community to take ownership of the Ongoing Facilitator Training (OFT) program that we run on a monthly basis. In February 2020, our volunteer Jodie who is based in the Northern Territory, ran this training for all facilitators via Zoom, connecting people in 3 states in a supportive and informative session. Participants included those who have facilitated over 40 Conversation as well as those yet to do their first! We also welcomed a facilitator who has just reconnected with the community after several months’ break from facilitating.

There was time allocated for shared reflections, and input from Nell our Qld Team Leader through a session on utilising insights from ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to address climate grief and despair. We finished up with Jodie taking us through a mindfulness meditation to calm and still the mind; and develop capacity for 'presence' and capacity to 'sit' with difficult emotions.

I feel more hopeful, supported, and able to take more sustained action on climate change due to the support network”.
