Australia’s contribution to emissions reduction

Why do Australia’s policies matter? Our emissions are only a small fraction of the world's total.

A:
  • Australia’s direct emissions are about 1.3% of global emissions but when our exported coal and gas are counted, Australia contributes about 4.5% of global emissions, with 80% of them coming from coming from fossil fuel exports.
  • If current government policies are maintained, cumulative CO2 emissions from Australia's fossil fuel exports will increase by 50% over the next decade to 2035. Along with domestic CO2 emissions, this would consume 9% of the remaining global carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5°C
  • Of 208 countries, only 6 emit more than 2% of the global total. These 6 countries make up 58.7% of the world total (Brazil 2.5%, China 30%, Indonesia 2.3%, India 7.8%, Russia 5% and USA 11%). If the remaining 202 countries move to net zero, that’s more than a 40% reduction. This means that the smaller countries do add up, and without action from them, we won’t hit our global targets. Greenhouse gas emissions by country
  • On a per capita basis, Australia has the 11th highest emissions in the world. On average, each Australian contributes three times the global average (15.4 tonnes of CO2 per individual versus 4.47 tonnes globally). How Australia compares in emissions
  • While there has been some improvement in recent years, in 2023 Australia was still close to last in the world in undertaking effective climate action, See Climate actions global rankings
  • As a developed country Australia has far more capacity to tackle emissions than do developing countries. Per head of population countries like Africa have contributed very little to global emissions yet non developed countries will be most affected by climate change. Emissions contributions and action

In terms of fossil fuel exports Australia is ranked second only to Russia for climate damage and we have ‘no plan’ for reduction.
